Fajardo, Puerto Rico
Fajardo, Puerto Rico (fah-HAHR-do) is a small but popular
city in Puerto Rico located in the east region of the island, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, north of Ceiba and east
of Luquillo. Fajardo is the hub of the majority of recreational boating in Puerto Rico and a popular launching port to Culebra,
Vieques, and the American and British Virgin Islands.
Fajardo, Puerto Rico is also the home to the largest Marina in the Caribbean, called Puerto del
Rey. The town contains various hotels; the El Conquistador Resort is one of its most famous hotels. Off shore near Fajardo few islets
can be found: Icacos, Palominos, Palominitos and Diablo, uninhabited coral islands.
Known as "La Metrópolis del Este" (Metropolis of the East), Fajardo, Puerto Rico is a major
tourism and recreation area. Fajardo is well known for its excellent day sailing, snorkeling and diving.

The day-sailing trips normally take you to one of the nearby cays for a day of snorkeling, sunbathing and feasting
(food and soft drinks are part of the deal).
For the divers, there is excellent clear water all around the cays, with plenty to explore. Puerto del Rey Marina
is in Fajardo and is the largest marina in the Caribbean.
An excellent place to snorkel, the shallow waters at Seven Seas are swarming with tropical fish, coral and an
abundance of other marine life. Offshore reefs help keep the waves down and strong trade winds make it an ideal
spot for sailing and windsurfing.
Nearby are water sports facilities, as well as a string of uninhabited islets that provide a secluded piece of
tropical paradise and more fantastic snorkeling.

This government-run Balneario has all the public services and amenities that guarantee a safe and fun day at the
beach. Seven Seas is known for its extensive sand stretch and clear waters. Bathers enjoy the lively atmosphere
here.
The area is frequently visited by many locals and by visitors who prefer it to the bigger Luquillo Balneario. The
beach is guarded by the local police force and there are lifeguard services.

If you like lakes and you're in this part of Puerto Rico you can check out Laguna Grande. All the
water falling down from the sky makes Laguna Grande a wet spot; the month of November is the wettest with most of
the rain, and the driest month is March.
Summer brings highs in the 80's to Laguna Grande, and during the night it cools down to the 70's. During the winter
highs are in the 80's while the cold winter nights at Laguna Grande are in the 60's.
Hidden along the Caribbean coast in Fajardo is one of the most spectacular Bioluminescent Bays or Phosphorescent
Bays (Bahia Fosforescente) in the world.
The mysterious blue-green light is created by micro-organisms (dinoflagellates) which thrive in an environment
uniquely suited to their needs. A trip into t he bay is a magical experience.
Fish flash by in dark water, and swimming is like floating through a glow in the dark picture. To create a bioluminescent bay you need a lagoon surrounded by Red Mangroves
(which occur in the tropics and semi tropics only).
The roots of the red mangroves release tannins that are rich in Vitamin B12, one of the important nutrients for
these light emitting dinoflagellates. The decomposing mangrove leaves release many other nutrients which add to the
nutrient rich environment.
The mangroves are a very peaceful and interesting place to kayak in. Night trips see the bioluminescence or
'sparkling fairy dust'! Tiny micro-organisms that emit a chemically made light when they feel pressure on their
cell wall. Adults and kids alike can do this, as well as first time kayakers.
The Bioluminescent Bay in Vieques is one of the unspoiled wonders of the
world. Just to experience this phenomena is, in itself, worth the entire journey.
Visit http://www.viequestravelguide.com for excellent information on Vieques and this fascinating island . There is NO
transportation off Vieques after dark, you must spend the night in Vieques to see the biobay there.
Las Cabezas, which means "headlands," refer to 3 promontories that extend into
the Atlantic Ocean. Impressive representation of seven different ecological systems including coral reefs, beaches,
lagoons, mangroves and dry forest within its 316 acres/128 hectares. The preserve is home to many endangered species.
A nature-lover's paradise, from the trails and boardwalks you can observe every major tropical habitat that exists
on the island, except a rain forest.
Trained guides, ample signs, demonstrations, and special programs and exhibits help visitors understand and
appreciate this fragile ecology.
To protect the sensitive eco-system, visitors are transported through the park and to the lighthouse on open
trams.
