Named in honor of King Philip II of Spain, the fort, also referred to as "El Morro" or "promontory", was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan bay, and defend the city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.

Guánica, with one of the most spectacular bays in the island, offers great beautiful beaches, hiking, diving, snorkeling and forest areas. You'll also see parts of La Parguera in Lajas, a popular tourist destination to see the famous Bahía Fosforescente (Phosphorescent Bay) and its keys and islet's.
